A type of rehabilitation/medical massage therapy in which direct pressure is applied to specified points on tender muscle tissue to bring about reduction in overall tension and pain relief.
Trigger points can feel like knots or tight bands in muscle tissue and many times feel very tender and can refer sensations of prickliness and or pain to other parts of the body. Release involves applying pressure to the trigger point in order to encourage the muscle spindles to unwind and relax, while at the same time increasing circulation to the affected area. The overall effect relaxes the connective tissues, increases blood flow, softens and re-hydrates fibrotic soft tissue and helps restore range of motion, flexibility, con-tractability and elasticity. |
